Naming a French town/place?

Yeah, I realize this seems like a pretty random/sketchy question...but I won't bore you with a long explanation. Anyway, I don't speak French but I need to devise a name for a fictional town in France. Any suggestions...or alternatively how exactly do the French go about naming places? Thanks
